That means that when we\u2019ve used them up, they\u2019re gone. Alternative energy makes it so that electricity can be generated without using up these precious resources.\n<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">\n<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">\nElectricity is an unavoidable necessity. Homes and businesses in the United States used 4,686,400,000 mega-watt hours of electricity in 2013 alone. Let\u2019s take a look at how much is required to generate electricity. A mega-watt hour is one thousand kilowatt hours.\n<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">\n<\/p><div style=\"width: 337px;\" class=\"thrv_wrapper tve_image_caption alignright\">\n<span class=\"tve_image_frame\">\n<img class=\"tve_image\" alt=\"Kilowatt\" src=\"http:\/\/www.electricsaver1200.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/06\/kwhr.jpg\" style=\"width: 337px;\">\n<\/span>\n<\/div>\n<p class=\"\">\nPer recent statistics, to produce just one kilowatt-hour takes:\n<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">\n<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">\n\u00b7\n1.09 pounds of coal\n<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">\n\u00b7\n1,000 cubic feet of natural gas\n<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">\n\u00b7\n0.08 gallons of petroleum\n<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">\n<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">\nSo, a kilowatt hour requires:\n<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">\n<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">\n\u00b7\n1,090 pounds of coal\n<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">\n\u00b7\n1,000,000 cubic feet of natural gas\n<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">\n\u00b7\n80 gallons of petroleum\n<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">\n<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">\nMultiply that by the demand for electricity by the US alone and you can easily see the importance of finding alternative sources of energy generation!\n<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">\n<\/p>\n<p class=\"\" contenteditable=\"false\">\nAlternative energy sources are renewable. The light from the sun shines every day and can be harnessed by solar panels to make enough energy to power an entire home. There are over 17,500 megawatts of solar electric capacity operating in the U.S., enough to power more than 3.5 million American homes. And solar energy is increasing in popularity exponentially year by year.\n<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">\n<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">\nSolar panel systems are becoming more and more affordable and accessible to the average household which is vital to widespread use of solar energy to power homes. In the past, the expense and lack of availability this method of energy was a stumbling block to it being used by most households and families but that\u2019s no longer the case.\n<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">\n<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">\nSimilarly, hydro power is used by many utilities to provide electricity to millions of homes in the United States.\n<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">\n<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">\nWhat\u2019s great about the use of alternative energy sources by utility companies is that they tie right into the grid and make it so that each household is being powered using less fossil fuels, without having to install any special hardware or make any major renovations.\n<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">\n<\/p>\n<h3 class=\"\" contenteditable=\"false\">\n<strong>Summary<\/strong>\n<\/h3>\n<p class=\"\">\n<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">\nThe importance of alternative energy sources cannot be overstated. If everyone were using some form of alternative energy instead of purely fossil fuels, we could ultimately put an end to the damage being done to the planet through pollution from the burning of fossil fuels.\n<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">\n<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">\nThis Earth Day, we could all stand to look into ways to improve our energy usage and start looking into using alternative means of
